Plans for Establishing a Home Base in Asheville, North Carolina

Establishing an SBT Home Base in Asheville, North Carolina
SBT is excited to announce that we are moving forward with our plans to create a home base and practice center in Asheville, North Carolina, beginning in April 2026. While SBT is, and will remain, first and foremost an online sangha, establishing a physical home would meaningfully support our mission. A home base would provide a place to broadcast teachings, support the day-to-day work of running SBT, and—most importantly—offer our global online community a physical space to gather for in-person training, periodic retreats, and direct practice with Venerable Tarpa.
Why Asheville?
Asheville offers a unique combination of qualities that align closely with SBT’s values and vision. Known for its open, creative, and inclusive culture, Asheville supports a thriving community of artists, contemplatives, and spiritual practitioners from many traditions, including Buddhism. Nestled in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the region is surrounded by exceptional natural beauty—forests, trails, and quiet spaces that naturally support reflection and contemplative practice. Asheville is also accessible. It is well connected by major highways for domestic travel and has a local airport with convenient connections through nearby international hubs, making it reachable for both U.S. and international sangha members. Together, these qualities make Asheville an inspiring and practical place to consider establishing an SBT home base.
Our Vision
Our vision is intentionally modest. We are not seeking to create anything grand or commercial. Instead, we envision a simple, affordable, community-supported space created solely to serve the needs of our online sangha—a physical home that supports practice, teaching, and connection for our global community.
A Phased and Responsible Approach
We are approaching this project gradually and responsibly, allowing the community’s support to guide each next step. We hope to have Venerable Tarpa arrive in Asheville in April 2026. In keeping with monastic values of simplicity and careful stewardship, our initial needs are minimal and focused entirely on supporting teaching and practice.
Phase One: Relocation & Temporary Housing
Our first step is to relocate Venerable Tarpa to Asheville and secure simple temporary housing. This could be a rented room or small apartment that allows him to teach, work, and begin building connections with the local community.
Target: $500–$1,000 in total monthly donations
Phase Two: Shared Practice House
The next step is to secure a rental house or apartment with sufficient space for visiting sangha members to stay, practice, and train. Housing and food would be offered freely to any visiting sangha member, with no expectation of payment.
Target: $1,500–$2,000 in total monthly donations
Phase Three: Expanded Facility
As support allows, we would look to move into a larger or better-suited rental property, enabling longer stays, more frequent visits, and small group retreats.
Target: $2,500–$3,000 in total monthly donations
Phase Four: A Permanent Home
Our long-term aspiration is to purchase a property with enough land to support sangha stays, retreats, and permanent housing for training monastics – a true SBT home base and future monastery.
Target: $5,000+ in total monthly donations
An Invitation
This project will move forward only to the extent that it is genuinely supported by the community. There is no timeline pressure and no expectation—only an open invitation. If this vision resonates with you, you are warmly invited to:
– Support the project through ongoing monthly donations.
– Share this vision with others who may feel called to help.
– Join our team of Volunteers working to make our dream a reality.
