Skillful Living

July 7th through August 17th - 2024

The Skillful Living study and practice series represents the foundation level of the SBT study curriculum, a Secular Buddhist study and practice guide founded on the timeless wisdom of the Buddha, a program created for audiences of diverse backgrounds and beliefs. The title Skillful Living refers to a simple three-part equation for improving our lives. First, gaining skills; secondly, mastering those skills; and thirdly, reaping the benefit – of a happy, fruitful life.

Skillful Living was designed to be accessible to all, regardless of ideology, religious affiliation, or culture, a teaching series that embraces both traditional practices as well as modern innovations. It’s an adaptive and holistic path: adaptive in its ability to be tailored to the unique needs of each student; and holistic in how it integrates and enriches every aspect of life.

Our teachings remain in line with the basic framework of traditional Buddhism, namely the cultivation of the Four Noble Truths, virtuous ethics, wisdom, and altruism. However, we differ in our move away from religious authority, dogma, absolutism, and the more religious, mystical, and cultural content presented in traditional Buddhism. What also sets us apart is our strong agnostic view, maintaining a balance between the truth and tangible benefits of the Buddha’s teachings, with the acceptance of the uncertainty and mystery of life.

SBT doesn’t reject views or disparage beliefs. Rather, we focus on and emphasize those aspects of the Buddha’s teachings that we deem most illuminating, plausible, and fruitful; those aspects which we believe to be the most suitable and beneficial for our community.
